NORTHERN RAILWAY SETS NEW BENCHMARKS IN ORIGINATING LOADING AND NOTCHES IMPRESSIVE EARNINGS DURING THE F.Y. 2013-14

NR CARRIES REVENUE LOADING OF 40.1 MT HIGHEST on IR

ORIGINATING FREIGHT EARNINGS RECORD NET GROWTH OF OVER onE THOUSAND CRORE

FOOD GRAIN LOADING REGISTERS 28% INCREASE

POL LOADING RECORDS 27% IMPROVEMENT

Surpassing the targets achieved during yesteryears and budgetary targets in originating revenue loading in the current financial year 2013-14, Northern Railway was able to achieve an impressive record of 40.1 MT, one of the highest on Indian Railways. The originating freight loading of 40.1 MT achieved for the period April-December is not only all time high in volumes i.e. 5.57 MT over 34.44 MT achieved last year but also indicates the highest growth rate of 16.17% over the previous year.   The corresponding originating freight earnings recorded a growth of 25.87%. During the first three quarters, Northern Railway achieved  Rs. 5431.95 crore as originating freight earnings against  Rs. 4315.52 crore during the corresponding period of last year i.e. net growth of over one thousand crore.  The total originating earnings including Passenger, other Coaching and Sundry earnings during this period on Northern Railway have notched the highest ever originating earnings of Rs. 11844.68 crore  during April-December this year as against Rs. 9846.50 crore last year resulting in a growth of 20.29%.

This achievement is despite limiting factors viz. slowdown in loading of sponsored food-grain by FCI during November and December due to prolonged agitation by FCI Supervisors and labour & adverse weather conditions impacting rail traffic.

Food-grain loading on the Railways assumes a significant activity in facilitating Public Food Distribution. As a significant loading railway for food grain from Northern India to various terminals all over the country, Northern Railway has been undertaking efforts to improve its operating efficiency. Food grain loading on Northern Railway for the year 2013-14 has registered 19.54 MT during April-December this year, compared with 15.22 MT achieved during the corresponding period of last year notching an increase of 28.38 % higher than last year.

Dovetailing its efforts to the initiatives of the government’s macro-economic policy in the sponsored food-grain loading segment, Northern Railway achieved a loading of over  50% of the programme of loading given by FCI for the year 2013-14 in the first two quarters. This is against the normal loading volume of 35% of the sponsored foodgrain between April-September which is considered a lean season. The Railway has to deal with factors viz. operational aspects of movement of grain, availability and deployment of wagons and fine tune efforts to achieve this target.

Northern Railway also achieved highest growth of 26.89% in POL loading from POL loading sidings on its system compared with last year.  The POL loading of 5.38 MT was achieved against 4.24 MT last year.  Northern Railway is also the primary zone for loading container cargo by CONCOR and other Private Container Operators.  The container loading during April-December this year also registered high growth of 9.48% over last year.  6.35 MT of container cargo was loaded primarily for Ports and domestic terminals compared with 5.80 MT during the corresponding period of last year.

Better terminal management initiatives which include intensive monitoring of empty rakes over 50 loading points across Punjab and Haryana was undertaken on a daily basis to achieve this high growth loading.  Intensive freight operation to enable this high record loading necessitated hands- on monitoring mechanism, improvement in reliability of assets and close co-ordination with the core sectors and customers.   Northern Railway is also the lead railway in the passenger services as it handles the highest number of Mail / Express passenger trains thereby making it a versatile railway dealing with complex operations.

Aggressive marketing strategy during the first three quarters of the current financial year also resulted in a spurt in loading of various other goods including Tractors, DOC, Paddy Husk, Organic Manure and Miscellaneous goods for NE region of the country.  Tractor loading went up by 43.24%, Timber by 94.36%, DOC by 62.06%, Organic Manure by 200% & Misc. by 36.17% as compared to the corresponding period of last year.

In addition to its impressive performance in freight operations and in Coaching Earnings, Northern Railway’s been consistently undertaking measures to meet the high demand in the passenger services. During the current FY 2013-14, Northern Railway ran 5626 Special Trains during summer, Festival & the current winter season as against 5022 Special run during the previous financial year despite a limited coaching stock.  The Railway is also taking all out efforts to meet its objective as a mass transportation mode by operating train services despite the current dense foggy weather. The Railway’s efforts to run premium air conditioned service on the busy Delhi-Mumbai route to meeting the peak demand for travel on the run of New Year this year has recorded impressive results. The train received full patronage on every trip of their scheduled service.

Continuing this momentum, the Railway is geared to achieve high targets in the balance period of current financial year through focused efforts.
